About

The process of the lino-cut has, until recently, been my favourite means of making art. After retiring from teaching art in a secondary school, where I found myself looking on enviously as my year 10 pupils were achieving success with the medium, I could hardly wait to have a go myself!

It starts with the recognition of an image that inspires and suggests how I might approach it, simplifying it down to areas of tone and texture. Then the quite arduous work that goes into each stage, leading to the final image is worthwhile, when it all comes together!

Since my printing press broke about a year ago, I have moved on to painting in acrylics. The subject matter for these paintings has been very similar: tree forms and stones. It’s always texture and edges that inspire me.

I have found inspiration in the stark, sometimes tortured shapes of trees, but in the end, the choices I make are in response to a gut feeling.
